Leonard Hunsley
December 26, 1940 - October 27, 2009
Leonard L. Hunsley, 68, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on Tuesday, October 27, 2009. Leonard was the second child of Gilbert and Eleanor (Anderson) Hunsley, born on December 26, 1940 in Denver, Colorado. He attended first grade at St. Patrick’s School in Denver until the Hunsleys’ moved their family back to South Dakota in 1947. He had one sister, Lilla May, and six brothers: Duane, Don, Lavern, Raymond, Dale and Mark.
After graduating in 1958 from T.F. Riggs, he attended SDSU in Brookings for one year. He returned home to Pierre and worked for many area businesses which included Don’s Sinclair and Anderson Tire. In 1964 he joined into a partnership with his brother Duane doing custom farming and operating rented land and one farm that they owned together until 1991. He drove truck for Jim Hoffman until his first bout with cancer. After recovering, he worked on the Beastrom Ranch until the late 1990’s. He went back to trucking for Dean Newman for a few years. He spent the remaining years working for Haskins Farms.
On January 14, 1967 he was married to Cora Gourneau and to that union were born two sons, Jeff and Scott.
Leonard is survived by his son, Jeff, his mother, Eleanor, sister, Lilla May, and brothers; Duane (Diana), Lavern (Georgia), Raymond (Lynne), Dale (Kathy) and Mark (Betty), sister-in-law, Nancy, and numerous nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his son Scott, his father, Gilbert, brother, Don, maternal and paternal grandparents, one infant nephew, one infant great niece and special friend, Deb Norton.
