Raymond Zakahi

Raymond J. Zakahi, 79, died April 20, 2010 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Pierre , SD.
Dr. Zakahi was born in Pauhau Mauka, Big Island, Hawaii , on August 27, 1930, to Jingiyu and Kama Zakahi. The family moved to Oahu in 1937, where he grew up and attended school. He graduated from Walla Walla College in College Place, Washington. He then attended the University of Nuevo Leon in Monterrey, Mexico, where he graduated with an MD in 1957. While studying medicine in Monterrey, he met & married Nylda Tijerina on November 9, 1954 . He did his internship and residency in the hospitals in Sioux Falls, SD.
He moved his family to Pierre in June of 1961, where he was a member of the Medical Associates Clinic until August of 1999. He served in numerous positions and committees most notably Chief of Staff at St. Mary’s Hospital in 1978 & 1979 and the South Dakota Retirement System Disability Advisory Committee from July 1, 1975 to March 23, 2010; In 1979, he started caring for patients in Highmore at the outreach clinic. In 1987 he began seeing patients in Onida, and shortly after in Gettysburg and Eagle Butte. He will be remembered for his quiet, gentle, healing manner. He was married to Karen on November 26, 1992. Upon his retirement he enjoyed endless days of golfing whether it be on Hillsview Golf Course, and many other places including his native Hawaii.
Survivors include his wife, Karen; his children, Walter, Catherine & grandsons Philip & Nathan (Las Cruces, NM) ; Hyrma (Pierre, SD); Michael, Julie & grandsons Josh & Raymond (Rifle, CO); Cesar (Missoula, MT); & Aurora Determan & grandchildren Jonathan & Elizabeth (Missoula, MT). Siblings Masao Zakahi; Betty Fujita, Carol Omoto, & George Zakahi; Step-children Brad Christenson (Aberdeen, SD); Brian, Kate & step grandchildren Sage & Miles Christenson (Santa Rose Beach, FL), & Kathy Christenson (Pierre, SD). He was preceded in death by his first wife, Nylda; his parents, Jingiyu & Kama; siblings Jim, Gladys, and Kiyoshi
