BiographyCecilia Maxine Hlebanja, 96, of Mitchelville, MD passed away July 16, 2012. Cecilia was born on the South Dakota prarie on August 30, 1915 in Pierre to Klemens and Amelia (Roblek) Hlebanja. She grew up on the family farm near Hayes, SD. During the Second World War, she served in the U.S. Navy Women’s Auxiliary at a hospital in the United States. After the Second World War, Cecilia moved to Washington, D.C. and worked at the Pentagon. Cecilia retired from the Pentagon after many years of government service. Cecilia was very independent, and in the 1940’s she was even recognized with a photograph in a Washington paper for driving a motorcycle! Cecilia was also a world traveler, having taken trips to Europe and to South America. Although she lived in Washington, D.C. for most of her life, she always considered Ft. Pierre, South Dakota home. Graveside interment services will be held at Scotty Philip Cemetery in Ft. Pierre at 10:00am, Wednesday, July 25 –returning to the prairie from which she came and which was always an important part of her. Cecilia is survived by nieces; Katherine (Andy) Wald of Pierre, Beverly Hatheway of Pierre, and Janet (Michael) Carlson of Colony, WY, and great-niece, Emily.
