Bernadine was born in Selby, SD on August 12, 1929 to Bernice & William Unker. She grew up and graduated from Selby High School and then went on to earn her Teacher's Certificate and taught in a one room country school for a year. On November 8, 1948 she married Dean Buchanan and together they raised five children, four sons and a daughter. Bern worked for the SD Dept. of Transportation as a Secretary and Administrative Assistant for 30 years. Her greatest love; however, was spending time with her children, flying kites, catching butterflies and baking. She was a wonderful cook and her baking was out of this world. And last, but not least, were the many memories spent on the Missouri River with Dean & their children; fishing, hunting and camping. Everyone was welcome at Bern and Dean's campsite; food, fun and bonfires were the normal evening occurrence. After Bern and Dean retired they still spent time driving down to the river to watch for geese or try to catch sight of a flock of cranes. Many Friday nights were spent at the VFW with dinner and dancing. They were wonderful dancers and had so much fun seeing friends there or down the road at the American Legion. Bern will always be remembered for her terrific sense of humor, kindness and generosity. Most of all though, she will be remembered as our Mom, we love her and we'll miss her forever.
Bernadine is survived by sons, Pat (Laurie) of Chancellor, SD; Dean Jr. (Jack) of Sioux Falls, SD; Clark of Blunt, SD, daughter Jane (Dan) Spreacker of Sioux Falls, SD; daughter-in-law Dorene of Mina, SD; brother Tom (Joyce) of Green Bay, WI; sister-in-law Betty of Milbank, SD; sister-in-law Rene (Gary) Ballou of Tempe, AZ; Six grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
Bern was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Dean, son, Spencer, her parents and brother Bill.
